ABOUT THE ARTIST
Joan Miró, a renowned Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist, was born in Barcelona. His work has been widely acclaimed, with interpretations ranging from Surrealism to a canvas for the subconscious mind, a re-imagination of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. Inspired by Cubist and Surrealist exhibitions from abroad, Miró was drawn to the vibrant arts community in Montparnasse, and in 1920, he moved to Paris, while continuing to spend his summers in Catalonia. In 1979, the University of Barcelona conferred upon him an honorary doctorate. Tragically, the artist passed away in his Palma (Majorca) home on December 25, 1983.
